Man, what a day!

Now, today's match was just what I would call cricket.
Amazing. Glorious. Exceptional. Magnificent. Outstanding. Pathbreaking. Shattering. Mindblowing. Phenomenal. Flabbergasting.
Call it what you want. I'm lost.

Today's a landmark day. 2 reasons.
1. South Africa monstrously chased down 434 in an ODI equally monstrously made by Australia.
2. First time in life, I nearly pissed following a match on the comp(Rediff to be precise).

How many times in your life do you get to see this scorecard -

Just have a look at the Strike Rate column in both. What more does one want..! Right now, my hands are jittery even to write a long post. So, I can best summarize the match ending with the chat session I had with PG, who also happened to follow the match on the comp.

Lampooning - One more

You can perhaps read this if you havn't already.

Ms D
She's continuing from where Mr D left. She too has a lot of credentials. She's in the Guinness Book of Records for being the only human to mug Ogata and recite it in reverse. She holds another record for the 'Fastest Speaker' when she read out the entire Bible in one hour flat. She's the first Indian Professor to detect proxies by measuring time lag, and relating it with confidence of the answer. She's also the first human victim of fatigue loading. Infact, spectroscopy samples of her ball and socket joint are being used to teach fatigue loading effects at MIT.
She believes that the answer to Universe, Life and Everything is a Laplace Transform. The most famous statement of her being ' If the function G(S) under consideration is a rational function of S, then the total number of poles is equal to number of zeroes counting the multiple order poles and zeroes if the poles and zeroes at infinity and at zero are taken into account', which caused rearrangement of a few neurons in students, who had to be admitted to the Taramani International Medical Institute. She almost lost her job when she said something like Van't Hoff discovered Photoelectric Efffect.

Pained

The greatest weak point in me of late is my arrogant decision making. It was a fine morning in November, when my good friend P approached me telling me about this for summer internship to be held here. I as usual, thought about it for 5 odd minutes, called up the evil muggu and discussed, immediately told P that as anyways I was aiming for an MBA, it served no purpose to do a research intern there, so I would probably do it in some company. But after 3 months, I got a feedback that interns in companies are all name sake. And you learn hajjar more if you're working under a prof, in which case IISc would have been indispensable. And today the list came out. P obviously got through, he's a maths GOD. 2 others, M and K who applied from Mech got through. Which means I would have peacefully got through had I applied. Duh. I should probably think twice before making any decision. Also, a lesson learnt - Apply for every damn thing. Do not choose while applying.

On a lighter note, today was the umpteenth time the barber told me to 'lower myself and sit' while having a haircut, as I'm apparently too tall. I jus got so pissed, I piled up all my anger and told him ' Sir, the distance between my 'bottom' and head is fixed. As I'm not an ape, and can sit only on my 'bottom', I cannot lower myself and sit. Please understand'. Duh.

Goody feeling

The last 3 days were pretty eventful. After 2 days of racking my brains, running around, getting feedbacks and opinions, I finally decided to minor in Financial Management. And I hope to get it.
Herd mentality again showed up. People taking Operations Research left and right, without having the faintest of ideas what it's about. I fell for it pretty much too, in the beginning, until my good friend reminded me of this. I had to rethink. And finally, to my happiness now, I chose FM. This was initially greeted with disappointment at home, the argument being ' You should learn Tech when you're at a Tech Institute'. Anyways, now it's fine, and they're happy too. I'm actually very excited about this. Much more than I was when I came here. Dunno why. (A bit sad though as I've unofficially ruled myself out of contention for the Lehman Intern next year)

After all this hullabaloo, I went on a trip with parents to a few temples near my native place, and around Pondicherry. I seriously had a fantastic time! It felt so good to be amidst people who simplify life greatly. Which puts me to shame. On one hand we're here, thinking of when to have the next pizza, cribbing about shortage of time. On the other hand, there are these people who lead such placid lives, work 365 days a year, without a tantrum. Such starkly different from ours. Kids playing around in sand, not worrying which book is better. Ladies going around in fields, with pots of water, not shopping for clothes. Men selling stuff for a measly 2 bucks, no bargaining for a one fourth reduction. This visit also reminded me how regularly I used to go temples to when I was young, and how complacent I've become of late. The roll numbers I used to leave behind in those temple walls seems a thing of the past. The Kalkandu which I use to eat so excitedly is forgotten. How life moves on!

If there's something that can make me shed a tear, it's nostalgia.

Lampooning

Yes. Thats what this post basically aims to do. I would go through a few aspects and details of my profs this sem, exposing many of their great achievements, which have remained in the dark for so many years. A few of my Mech classmates demanded some entertainment, and this is all I can do. Others can nevertheless be imaginative enough to create images of profs in mind.

Lets start on!

1) Ms A

Why she still calls herself Ms remains an unsolved puzzle. Infact, the HOD of our maths department is considering to publish this as an apparent paradox, and as a million dollar problem. Also, she claims that she is the only woman to have understood Einstein's Space Time relations. Sadly, nobody pays any heed to her claim because she thinks that this theory implies that you shouldn't waste time in class. She has also won the 'Fastest Indian speaker' award. Otherwise, a pretty normal lady.
Maa'm, if you by any chance are reading this, it's just for fun.... Kidding.

2) Dr B

Here is the big man himself. He is a renowned person in Vibrations and Machine noise control. His trick to have got him this famous is that machines stop making noise when he's around. To put it simply, they sleep. Now why they sleep when he's around still remains a hot topic of research, especially at Cornell. Infact, several pharma companies have sued him for allegedly reducing their market production and sales of sedatives. He still faces several charges on ' Attempted murder by monotone voice control'. His Phd thesis titled ' Going through the exercise of a 5 dimensional Grashoff mechanism with 1 link fixed, nothin fancy about it' was world famous. Also, he's the heaviest professor alive, and has a bad reputation of having broken 742 benches in Class room complex alone. Owing to the same reason, he cannot take even 2 continuous classes as his legs fail him.
Sir, if you by any chance are reading this, it's just for fun. You're a stud.

3) Dr C

God of all gods. Recently conferred the title of 'Concept King' by the Royal British Association of Old Fluid engineers. This man holds many many records and distinctions. He holds the IITM record for having breathed most of its air, for 45 years. He also holds the IITM record for the maximum number of years taken to do a Phd-21. He believes that the answer to universe, life and everything is Dimensional Analysis. Infact, his Phd thesis titled ' Dimensional Analysis of Boundary layer theory for viscous fluids, in other words, taking into account the Taylor series, or something like that' remains a classic in all of viscous flow theory. He is also credited with the 'Indian with the highest Erdos number' tag, close to infinity, which basically means that all his papers are fraud. He is also the only Indian to have run a marathon through 69 countries, publicizing the Boundary Layer theory. He is also the recipient of the prestigious Lehmann Brothers poetry award for the one liner ' This y is not the same as that y, that is why'. His belief that 'No paradox has a solution' nearly cost him his job, when he uttered it at an International Conference. 'All quantities increase in the positive direction of axes' is one among his many beliefs well known in the scientific community. He is also the propagator of his Bluff philosophy- If you don't know an answer, bluff it.
Sir, if are by any chance reading this....No, that won't happen. Because I'm pretty sure you don't know how to operate a comp.

4) Dr D

He was initially suspected to be a Japanese refugee in India, until recently, when it was known that he's actually a visiting prof from Tokyo. Apparently, he was denied a visa from Tokyo, because the official's details and the voice did not match in the telephonic interview. Only when they reached his home did they know that he was actually a guy. He is also the recipient of the prestigious ' IIT student's sympathy' award for having made a statement that proxy will hurt the sentiment of the other guy. Otherwise very nice.
Sir, if you're reading this, kuosowhaahaahwikoi. (I hope that's something in japanese)

5) Dr F

He supposedly ran out of Nimhans. Was admitted for ' Chronic urge to take classes ' by the IITM elec department. He is of the belief that the answer to universe, life and everything is Analog circuits. He also has wordly knowledge. Citing an example, 'Consider Volleyball, where the players put the ball into the basket'. He treats other departments, especially Mech, close to how he treats his Ambassador. He's the first prof in IITM who is known for blatantly refusing to do research. He was the main reason why the slot system came about in IIT, imposing a maximum limit on the number of classes in a week. Many students have had their hands come out separately because of excessive writing. He is also the reason why the number of piles' cases in students doubled a few years back.Anyways, GOD.
Sir, in case you're reading this, Mech rules.

6) Dr G.

He is known more commonly by the name Sloth LV.. His belief that 'The slower you talk, better the students understand' won him critical acclaim all over the world. He is credited with the tag of the 'First Indian to use Powerpoint in Mantech, unsuccessfully'. He believes that the answer to universe, life and everything is Sand Casting. There are rumours that he's been stopped from presenting conference papers because the Russians get irritated and throw abuses at him. What he's concluded from Einstein's space time relations is that time can always be got back, provided you conserve energy by bunking your own classes.
Sir, if you're reading this, Mantech sucks.

Hmm..thats about it. More to come later, perhaps.

This is all a joke. Please don't take it seriously.

Fear..

I somehow keep having this fear these days that the Best in my life is over. Walking with your head held high after topping your state, or being micrometers away from your 'one', are not going to happen again. Duh.

The way to spend valentine's day..

..is certainly not with a Dynamics of Machinery quiz.

IITians in politics

The major news item covered today:

IITians start a political party.

Now, as amateur as I am in politics, my opinions might be as far from reality as it could get.
Firstly, as far as an invisible, hypothetical support from my side goes, they have it. But support can be of different cuts. A sympathetic one, for instance. Or a fully passionate one. The instance here would salvage more of the former. There are quite a few points to be discussed here. At the outset, these 5 guys definitely need to be congratulated for even thinking of starting something which a normal IITian cannot think of even in the delta sleep. But, how far will they go is a big question. I know it's partly stupidity to ask this, this is similar to asking how many marks a person will get in an exam before he's even started writing it. But you can definitely find out the range of marks he's probably going to get, after finding out his preparation before the exam. And thanks to the government of India, for giving a holiday today, I could sit at home and watch this 'big story' on CNN-IBN. An exclusive coverage, interviewing the students forming Paritrana, watched a couple of times, could easily tell me that they were very very unsatisfactory in their approach. Simply because it seemed to me, that there wasn't any fire in the belly, or the adrenaline rush any entrepreneur has. (If this maybe called entrepreneurship)
It was more of a sprightly talk. Clear focus seemed to be lacking. Again, if I was given the chance of interviewing them, I would probably have asked them more specific questions than just the motive behind this, or their future plans. Also, the most important point being that this issue has come to limelight solely because of the 'IIT' tag associated with it. Just any 5 students in a remote corner of India forming a political party (am not sure if there already are) have faint chances of figuring in the national news of a leading news channel.

The biggest point is this: IIT tag doesn't mean a shit in politics.

This tumultuous field offers neither the scope for analytic thinking , nor intelligent rationality. It offers scope only for street smartness. Experience tells us it is only for those who have the uncanny knack. Statistics tells us, it's not for IITians. But, being an IITian here is a double edged sword. It makes people recognise you instantly. Your job is half done. But the other half, conquering this salacious field, is almost certainly far from being done. And being an IITian does not even take one remotely close to it. This is a field which originally started with the meaning 'The art of governance', and now has become a popular household term, in the derogatory sense, thanks to all the wonderful people who make up this field. Anyway, leaving that apart, I seriously felt this news issue wasn't dealt with properly, as in, it wasn't ripped apart the Rajdeep style. The guys would already be sleeping with brimming confidence, for having to go through such an easy day with the media on the very opening of their party. Aah, definitely not for long. Not long before they realise that tackling MPs is a tonne better than handling the media. Now they're under the ubiquitous camera. No escape. Chosen path, stick on!

Also, the media in general (especially in our country) is known for evading certain miniscule points, not because they're irrelevant. But because the Sensation, the sole reason for its survival, is avoided or nullified. Today is a perfect example. Note how conveniently, and glibly they avoided putting forth the facts about the students' past. A comment in passing which appears on the website just mentions that one of the guys was doing farming for three years. Yes, correct. Farming. Nothing about the others. I mean, doesn't this even raise a few eyebrows? I know I have been too cynical regarding this, but facts are all I want. Considering that there might be more politicians having flunked their 12th than those who have passed it, it is definitely NOT necessary to submit, or declare openly the academic qualifications. Only Tanmay's qualification is spelt open.(Btw, only God knows why he did an MA in economics after a Btech Mtech). The basic reason I'm really uncomfortable with this not being mentioned is, we fail to follow if this was their sole motive. Are they doing this just because they want to do it? Are they starting this just to create a sensation knowing that they have the hallowed letters aside. I feel slightly in the negative. One, because, there is no gut reason they offer. Making a statement ' We want to take India to its right place ' is as general as it gets. Goddamit, if I was Swati, I would have asked them to explain right there what 'right place' was, that they were hoping to reach amidst 10000 other politicians. Two, as I said earlier, they seemed so languid in their approach. Succesful politicians are those, who are passionate about their ideas, who can go any stretch to achieve what they want, make the most of all sweeping statements, but climb up the ladder pulling others down deceitfully. Peacefully too. How far these guys can do the same remains to be seen.

Nevertheless, a revolution starts somewhere. In all circumstances, we may as well find a total flipover in Indian politics in the coming decade or two. These guys have to stick to and uphold the responsibility they've taken. Which no IITian, to my knowledge, has done, again, even in the delta sleep.(Dunno why I'm obsessed) All I hope for is that they have realised what they're upto. And what they've aimed at. This is going to be 10 times tougher than working at MIT. I just pray these guys have cognized that fact.

Anyways, here's to their success.!

Multitudinal..

Saarang's almost done. Over. Finished. A day to go.
I must agree, a plethora of talent showcast.
Well. Saarang shows how an eclectic combination of art, lit and academics can perhaps try to make a good, well informed individual. Albeit, there are moronic enough people here, altogether insane , who cease to use the opportunity, and are of the belief that mugging in the room is the best avenue saarang offers.

Idiots.

Though I'm not informed of the motivation behind setting up Saarang, or Madigras as it was known earlier, the reason is as guessable as the number of eskimos in North Korea. It's a famous fact that IITians are close to, if not the worst in public speaking. Communication, rather. An average IITian can be a connoisseur of art, perhaps as much as a doped Llama appreciates a Van Gogh. So primarily, as far as an IITian is concerned, its a free of cost program to improve interpersonal skills. Unfortunately, many end up improving their concentration skills. Empathise, friends. Sympathise at least. For living with humans, for records. Only for records.

The ability to solve a transfigured hypercrystallized electrothermophotovoltaic 14 dimensional circuit makes no man.
The ability to watch Venkatasaigirighiranjeevi dancing in Piruthamaathiarthuiachoodu, holding your pee, makes no man either.

Its the ability to make people awe at you, magnetise towards you, make them laugh, with secret jealousy, that get you close to being a man. Of course I'm preaching. I can't do any of that either. But at least I try!
Its after all, appreciation. In real life, you do good only if you appreciate the exquisite nuances of your demand, or thoughts. We live in a society. Beg your pardon, society of men. Not books.
No wonder IITians are so good at research.

Anyways, leaving that 'so damn painfully irritating' part, I enjoyed most of Saarang. No success in any form though. Its allrite. I'm not dejected. I know I'm no good a crowd puller, or an expert. Master of none.
This does keep giving me bouts of inferiority complex, can't help it much though. I want to be the best in what I do. God! Now I empathise with Monica. Apart from all the interesting stuff this fest offered, it more importantly told me how people behave(read change) in a society. How those darned looks differ when accompanied by a couple of new people. How people prioritise. So, it tells me, who my real friends are. And who act to be so, in the non saarang mundane period, which ironically runs for 360 days. It helps me judge people. Yes. I've learnt a lot. In a related bit, I also went through about a 3 hours of trauma, mind shattering experience. Its changed my mind drastically about a few people. Made me lose my sleep for a night. I discussed this only with my best buddy(read Paapi). He empathised with me. Note empathised.

And of course, apart from good events, there was beauty in the campus. Some forced beauty though. Didn't like that. Natural beauty just turns me on. India seriously rocks, in that aspect! T'was time again for inferiority complex. Not a millionth of a penny for guessing why. But that's the way life is. Every dog has its day. Hope and optimism carry life forward. Its just another week after all. The grim getting over Saarang period awaits me.

And all you bastards, who mugged in the room, a million rats on you.

Try this.

Vitto

Well, there are four broad circumstances I write under. One, when I'm happy. Two, when I'm sad. Three, when I'm excited about something. Fourth, when I'm pissed off with something.
(The fifth might come up, when I start getting sloshed..)

I'm writing this, coz I'm happy. The reason pretty small, possibly inane. We have this course called 'Electrical sciences', mainly analog circuits, taken by a prof called by those magical letters.

Vitto.

Man, he's GOD.

He's unarguably the best in analog circuits in IITM, pretty vastly experienced, and his teaching, I feel is surpassed by a few(read none). To begin with, I'll let some of you guys help me find out his psychology. In the first class, he just amazed me again with some of the most contradicting sentences I've ever heard in my life. I cease to find out what kinda person he is, coz he's confused me so much, that I just cannot figure him out. His set of instructions for the course in the first class contained the following..

1) Your department(Mech) has given me only 1 lecture per week, to complete this course, which is not possible. I need 75-80 lectures, which means I have to take a minimum of 4 hours a week, possibly 5. Goddamn, an increase from one to four hours. Dammit.

2) I'll start taking the class 10 minutes before the start time, and continue for 10 min after the hour is up. Whaat.? What does he think of himself..?

3) I need to take classes on saturdays and sundays if possible, if we need to.
Is he out of his head..?

4) The class representative needs to inform me at any cost, if a class is free, so that I can take it.
Madar..!

5) Next, regarding exams, it'll be the quiz-end sem pattern. Only design problems, because you're engineers. No theory. And do not write english in my paper. I want only numbers. I do not like reading. Weirdo..!

6) You'll be given full credit if an answer is wrong, provided the logic is correct, but you'll get zero if you mess up with the units, say megaohms, for ohms, coz those are unforgivable.
Scared..

7) You'll get 100 marks if say, you attempt 80 marks and get them correct, but do not have time for the other 20 marks. Oooh..eccentric..?

8) I want complete discipline in the exam hall. I do not want to hear any sound whatsoever. If anyone's caught, no problems. They just have to repeat the course.
Shit scared.

9) If at any point of time, you happen to leave the hall, for whatsoever reason, straightaway 30 percent of your marks are deducted, and 10 percent for every min after five minutes. And you can be assured, if you go out, there are faint chances you end up passing my course.

10) If someone wants to go to the bathroom, he/she can bring a bottle and do it under my supervision. Freako..!

11) Next, the make up exams. Please do not miss a quiz or an exam in the hope of writing the make up quiz. Make up quizzes are made considerably tougher. Its very difficult for students to do well. Infact, no one has passed my make up exam soo far. Zzzzzz...!

12) Regarding the classes, I do not force you to come. You may or may not come. There's no attendence, but obviously, I advise you to come.

13) You can walk in, or walk out at any point of time, but please do so without disturbing others.

14) You can eat or sleep in the class. I do not mind even the whole of first bench sleeping. Do whatever you want in class, but silently.

Now tell me, what kinda guy is he...? Age wise, pretty old. So I guess a bit of generation gap does exist. But, but, I'm in love with him. Reasons coming...

This whole process, the 15 points above suggest to me, that he respects the students. I mean it. There are hardly profs who respect students. Most of them treat us as if we're at their disposal.
He wants us to learn something. Something concrete. Something we never forget. Something at which we are unbeatable. Well, as far his teaching goes, awe inspiring is the least I can say. I have NOT come across any prof who can put forth points so damn clearly to students as he does. Unshakable concepts.

Requisite for the class - Bull-headed concentration. 100 percent.
In fact, its after his classes that I've learnt what 100 percent concentration takes. All that're there in your world, are the prof, the board, and your notebook. Nothing else. Absolutely nothing else.
You see only the prof, and the board. There was something in his teaching which was unique. Which I have never come across in my life. Which took the past 10 days to find out. The uniqueness lies in his style of teaching. After spending these two weeks, I've noticed that he is the prof who can get closest to 'reading a book'. Man, its totally true..! Imagine this. You have an amazing book with you, which is strong in concepts. Incredibly strong. And that you're blindfolded, and someone's reading the book for you. Continuously. While you're reading a book, you can stop at a place where you feel uncomfortable, or difficult. But with someone dictating, the person cannot be stopped, which is the case with Vitto.

Which means, you gotto have a remarkable concentration, and grasping power. You lose it for a mere 30 seconds, Lo.! You're gone..Gone gone gone..No way you can understand. No way on earth..! I'm sure Spanky agrees with me. And that's why I'm so happy. I have been fighting for first benches in this course, and have been following him perfectly, which just makes me feel so GOOD..! I don't know if this is so very idiotic, or unique to me, but learning from any GOD level prof, and grasping points which I feel my mind couldn't have thought of, makes me just sooo happy..makes me want to jump up...I'm so happy once again..!

Long live Vitto..

Nicks..

Nicknames.

Well, if there's something common to all IITians, its gotta be this. This traditional practice of assigning nicknames to students, when they come in as freshers, by seniors, will remain an incessant one. Well, to give you an example of how much this is a part of our culture, the inaugural lecture at last year's SHAASTRA, our tech fest, was delivered by a scientist, an IITM alumnus(I forget his name). And he started with 'Hi. I am Fungus.'

Practically, this helps us dispense with the names, and helps in quick bonding. Now, come on, you must agree with me that you'll be closer to a guy when you start calling him 'Pussy' rather than ' Rishab'. The freshers are nicked by the seniors during the initial ragging session, where the underbelly freshies make a stupid or a blatant error in answering a question or an opinion. Let me try going through some of the names, and how funnily they arose.

Nicks arise mainly, as I said earlier, due to the stupidity on the part of freshies.

Senior : What's the capital of punjab?

Freshie: ....(Stays speechless)

Senior : Ok. Whats the capital of Chandigarh?

Freshie : Whaaat..? There's something Fishy there.

I goddamn don't know what he was thinking. But that how it is. So, he got the nick Fishy.

Well, next, my very own roommate, original name ' Sandeep Rajpurohit'..

Senior: Abey, gaaliaan de.

He: Madar.., Bhen.., Chu....whatever whatever..

Senior: Nahin, I want more..many more.

So our dear fella doesn't know what to do..just makes up.

He: L.. chussu, Ga.. chussu, B.. chussu, XX chussu....ended giving up some n chussu's..

Thus the nick, Chussu.( Those who don't know hindi, pardon me)

Well, some nicks are awesome, like POPA, which stands for President of Po.. Affairs, or BOND, Bastard Of Nth Degree, or BOFI, Butt On Fire, while some can only earn pity, like Testis, or Dickhole. Adding on, my very own friend Siva, earned a nick Stokes, as on being questioned by seniors on the flow pattern of his sem$$, he actually started working it out. And another guy , who was nicked RP(Randi putr) as he didn't know who his room father was. Moving on, another incident last year, when a freshie was being ragged.

Senior : Ok. Assume you're an ant. And you are right at the bottom of a girl's body. Describe your motion upwards, in the best of language.

Freshie : Said something arbit in the beginning, and at a point said ' I reached a hill with an antenna on top'. Man! Hilarious. So he was christened Antenna.

Of course there are guys who are nicked by what they do, as my friend Anand, who apparently looked like a duck while walking, thus Ducky, or a senior, who always scratched his ba;;s, thus Scratchy. Or a past incident, as Spanky, coz he admitted to have spanked a girl's butt in 9th.
And Paapi, as he lied to a senior, which was a 'paap'. And my friend, anirudh, when asked for the split up of his body weight, conveniently forgot his ba;;s, thus Photon balls, in short Photon.
And a freshie, when asked for the size of his ..., reportedly said 'Dedh(One and a half in hindi) inch'. Man..! yeah, so damn accurate huh..? So Dedh.

Which reminds me of my original supposed to be nick which was changed. When asked when was the last time I saw p..., I said it was in 10th, as after that I was busy with JEE preparation. So they were so impressed by the control I had that they wanted to nick me LC(Lun@ Control)..! Which was eventually changed in a matter of minutes to CB, and for the reasons, you can ask someone who knows, not me..!

Some other good nicks include Motorola, Trauma, Lace, Sania, Virgin, Caesar, Konsti, STD, MGM, POTA, etc etc.

And some other bad ones include DV, abnorm, piggie, etc..not many..

And some other gross ones include Thika, STD, Lauda, Lando, Laundiya, Chutiyaps, Hymen, Randi, Pussy, Yoni, Gandu, well, lotsa them.

Happy naming..!

well well..

I just had to put up this again. An awesome post.
Mostly Thoughtless: 2005 : A Crappy New Year

12/29/2005

Oohh..

Huh. The trip to bangalore went off decently, but not very satisfying. Fell sick most of the time, just bought books, met up with a few friends, went to school, discussed a lota stuff with uncle ranging from stock markets to autism, and of course leered at a few VIT chicks on the way back in Brindavan Exp. The next sem just a couple of days away. Its gonna be a real hard time I guess. For guys I haven't already bugged, here's the news- We have 26 credits next sem, the most amongst all branches in any year. Whats worse, 5 four credit PMTs..get that..! 5 four credits..dammit..!
Any sane guy here will sympathise with me, understanding what that amounts to. Anyways, I hope I reach a near concrete decision 'bout my next career moves the end of next sem. Saarang's up, though I am no coord, am sure most of the week will be wasted. And I sincerely hope I play some baski that I left in the third sem, thanks to all the movies on the comp. Aah, reminds me, now that I've put a 9 with a comp in my room, i can rest in peace about the usage of it..oooh..was really worried if my dad would just get on me. And I sincerely do pray that our project work carries on, so that we don't have to keep seeing the prof's face with a spasm of guilt everytime.
Hopefully, 2006 brings in more cheers, luck, and happiness than ever, perhaps with no looking back.
God, keep all safe, hale and hearty..!
And happy new year to all...!

12/14/2005

Looking forward...

I am all excited.

It is the place which sheltered me for seven years.
It is the place which made me realise what I was.
It is the place where I started pursuing my dreams.
It is the place which showed me how abstruse life could get.
It is the place where I first experienced what love was.
It is the place which taught me what an inspiration and a role model could do.
It is the place which taught me to distinguish the right from the wrong.
It is the place where I made friends of a lifetime.
It is the place where I earned respect and love simultaneously.
It is the place which had an eclectic combo of fun and distress.
It is the place which shall remain in my heart forever.

Yes..! I am going to Bangalore..!

Humor

I just had to put this.

In the Gates-Narayana Murthy jugalbandi, a few days back, this was how the conversation began.

Mike handed to Murthy.

Murthy : 1...2...3... (Mimicking mike testing)

Passes the mike to Gates.

Gates : 1 billion..2 billion..3 billion..

Uproar.

Herd mentality

Its high time I write sense in this blog, apart from going through rounds and rounds about meself.. Anyways, this post is on something I've started hating the most, ( next only to bittergourd)..

HERD MENTALITY

Nothing could possibly surpass this ubiquitous behaviour which people so easily develop as they grow up. After being a witness to this, rather, being in the thick of it, I would say this is possibly as irritating as it could get. What's worse, the system at IIT whole heartedly supports it.

Some 5 guys take statistics..70 others follow.. ( I fell a prey to this too..)

Some guy goes does a project..10 others follow.

Some guy takes a book from the lib..15 others xerox it. (Though the book has crap..)

Some guy has started preparing for CAT.. 20 others follow.

Some guy listens to Marlyn Manson..5 others (Who can't say ' Hi. How are you?' ) download all his songs, start listening to it, headbanging like a pack of jerks..

Some guy joins an IT company..100000 others follow.

I mean, what the fuck..? I, for one, find this despicable, atrocious, repugnant..what not..

This just exposes one of the greatest weak points in oneself- Lack of self confidence, Lack of Independent thinking. When God has been kind enough to allocate 150 pounds of grey and white matter, why can't you make use of it, atleast to find out what YOU want, and what YOU like...?

No, I don't want you to use your head for quantum physics, or string theory, for heaven's sake..! Atleast for figuring out what you like...and not following any tom, dick and harry for everything they do..After all, if a person cannot find for himself what he wants, how can he climb the ladder of success, let alone reaching the zenith..Oops, I just made a logical error. This person does not even have a ladder of success to climb, all he has is a ladder which others climb. Independent thinking is a quality which I feel archly lacks in students(at least here..). The whole of philosophy(I've done a 3 credit course on it last sem..!) aims at identifying yourself, who you are, what you can do.. And the last thing it can possibly aim at is to copy others. I, till very recently too, had this habit of taking what others say, for granted, presupposing its validity. I was one amongst the thousands..

But now I am not. Unless I am totally convinced, I strongly disagree to it, be it a statement from HOD of a dept, or my branch topper..Coming back, I was reading a book called ' 50 companies that changed the world'. Was very much an ordinary book, but the stark points to note were the lives of the founders. NOT ONE person did the same thing as his peers. Not a single guy got AIR 100 in JEE, not a single guy presented a paper in UG, not a single guy got a C.G of 10, nor did anyone pass out from a B school and join an Investment Bank to get money..

THEY DID WHAT THEY LIKED..WITH PASSSION..LOVE..

Reminds me of an article I had read long back in Business India,(IMF chief or someone had written, I don't remember..)

' Having taught students of the likes of Harward, MIT, and IIMs, I can say that the level of Indian students is nowhere lesser than the others. BUT, there is one crucial difference.

'Indian students have never failed an exam,
Indian students have never lost a job.'

Of course he said it figuratively, but this just goes to show where we are. We need for ourselves such Principal protection, that we fail to go out of the way, and just follow the safe path as others always do..The total output might be way higher if each one of us do what we like, pursue our interests..But I know.. All this is being heard, read by a stoned world, which carries along the way its always been..for eternity..huh..

11/27/2005

Doubts..

Was just remembering the kindaa doubts I used to get in school..outright stupid, but worth a thought anywhile.. For eg :

I spent almost a whole year(5th or 6th, i don't remember) convincing myself that angle B (shown above) is indeed equal to angle A, and not greater. I asked my teacher, my dad..but I wasn't convinced..Finally had to convince myself somehow.

Second one..When first exposed to electricity(in 9th, I think), we were taught that there is no current when a circuit is open. So i had this doubt : Current is produced by the flow of electrons. Now, if the circuit is open, how do the electrons know that the circuit is open without actually flowing, and finding out, and inturn not flowing...Hilarious absolutely, but the shocking part is I did not get an answer even from my teacher, for which I was terribly upset.

Also , a question which came about when I was teaching my sister optics a few months back(when she came up with it...), as to 'Why certain objects are transparent, and others opaque'. An absolutely stud question, I didn't have an answer to it, neither did any of my friends..Whose answer I finally found in Griffith, which had hajjar electromagnetic polarization funda in it, and that the phenomenon of transparency was actually found in 1987..!! Phew..

Nostalgia..

My sis came home today and told me this..

'Bhaiya, we had a NIE(Newspaper in education) class today on ' How to be a good listener '
Everybody slept'.

Hee hee..

11/12/2005

Why..

Why is it that I get depressed often..
Why is it that I feel I am not made for engineering..
Why is it that I feel IIT is not the place for me..
Why is it that I feel I am a useless piece of shit..
Why is it that I cannot stand against atrocious ' RG'..
Why is it that I sometimes feel its better I stayed in school forever..
Why is it that I keep wanting to mark my life..
Why is it that I feel I want to be the best in anything I do..
Why is it that I don't feel like doing anything because I am NOT the best in anything..
Why is it that I feel inferior to others..
Why is it that I feel I'll never be loved again...
Why is it that I feel I need to satisfy everybody's expectations..
Why is it that I am more of a conformist than a rebel..

Probably something's wrong with my head..

Hindi Commentary...

Hindi commentary sucks..

I was watching the India-Sri Lanka match today on DD. Hence got another opportunity to listen to the 'unbearable' hindi commentary. I was so pissed off with it, I thought I should put up a post on the jargon they speak..Well, it isn't exactly jargon, but so highly irritating as they just kinda narrate whats happening. I compiled a few of 'em, and I have translated it into english, which has made it even funnier. Imagining the Hindi version might be necessary for a few..

1) 'Murali's deliveries are coming in and going out'..
He meant the normal offspin and the doosra... But are we viewers blind..? Can't we see it..?

2) Senseless idiots, usually shout at the top of their voice..
' And Gambhir lofts it straight towards Mid wicket with great force(70 Db)......and...... one bounce to the fielder(30 Db)..' And this happens hajjar times..

3) An extension of the previous..
' And Gambhir has hit the ball straight towards square leg, its going to the boundary(70 Db), but...the fielder is there(30 Db)..'

3) This was the one I couldn't believe..Man..! How can they speak rubbish..??
'If everything goes well, India plays well'..

4) ' Oh..a beauuuutifuuuul outswinger from Zoysa, BUT Dravid misses it marginally..'
Again, can't we see..?? And what does he mean by ' Beautiful outswinger BUT Dravid...'

5) When they turn the camera towards Attapattu for a few seconds, show him thinking..
' Attapattu seems to be in deep thought, wondering what to do..'
Oh..ya..thanx.. I thought he was day dreaming..

6) Some ridiculously obvious statements, over and over again..
' India should try and get some wickets' or
' Sri Lanka should try to score some runs now '
What else are the players out for..Chick Hunting..??

7) The standard Hindi dialogue which can make a new born baby wake up from deep sleep..
' And..its an over pitched ball, Dravid takes it close to his body, uses his wrist, turns it towards deep mid wicket, and the ball is going towards the deep mid wicket boundary..and its 4 runs'..(Linearly increases from 25 to 80 Db). I know, the fun here is half lost because its put in English..

8) ' Dravid wanted to hit the ball towards deep square leg, but took the top edge and went to mid off..'
Oooh.. I didn't know that. I thought he did some magic and got the ball to mid off when his bat was towards square leg..

9) One more ridiculous statement
' Sehwag's confidence is showing right from within himself..'
Oh..my sweet ass..Will I show everybody Sehwag's confidence..?

And some N others.. but i had lost patience to even listen to them.. These fellows seriously need some training..Oh ya..i forgot the last bit..

10) After Sri Lanka won the match...
' Sri lanka have won the match. They must be happy.'

11/05/2005

Anoxymoron..

How's this statement:

I am not totally useless. I can be used as a bad example.

10/29/2005

My school life..

I was thinking of my crazy days in school.. I have been to most parts of India. I started with my kindergarten in Tuticorin, moving to Bihar, repeating U.K.G coz of some age probs, did till 2nd there, off to Rajasthan(Near Udaipur) till 6th half..remaining 6th in Oxford, Bangalore..7th to 10th in National Public School, Rajajinagar..11th and 12th, National College, Jayanagar..And finally here,IITM..

I had amazing school days..I jus regret one point in hindsight. All my school life, I've been mocking at most of the teachers, simply because I never found anyone good enough..(Till my JEE days of course..), and this has hit a hard nail onto me. I still remember my college principal telling me ' Karthik, it doesn't matter how hard you try, or how brainy you are, you will NOT succeed unless you have the blessings of the teacher. So, do not irritate them.' And i think I never managed to get anyone's blessings..lotsa curses though..and its costing me heavy..Some of my episodes were(Which I can recollect)...

1) My chem teacher..I used to constantly piss her off..like:

She : The electrode potential is always E(Anode) - E(Cathode) or E(Right) - E(Left).

Me : Maa'm. Why E(Right) - E(Left)..?

She : Because anode is always conventionally on the right..

Me : What if I look from the other side..?

Class goes into laughter.. And she goes like ' What do you think of yourself..blah..blah..'

2) I still remember paining our Bio teacher with one of my friends, while she did reproduction chapter..

She : Babies are born by a natural process called..whatever..

Me : Maa'm. Why natural.? Or..explain..

3) Paining math teacher in 7th(along with a guy, now here in IITM) for hajjar classes asking her why SSA congruency condition was not valid..and finally she accepting that SSA condition was valid but not there in syllabus..!

4) Got screwed once maajorly in oxford.. During a social class...I stand up and say

'Maa'm. If we go at this rate, we won't even finish even half the syllabus' I distinctly remember, she stopped taking classes after that, people in my class were really pissed off with me, and I had to go and beg..beg..plead..apology..with the princi too..And then, finally she yielded...huh.

5) Eating in class sometime, and getting screwed..

6) This was one heck of it..We had to write an english essay in an exam on any topic.. I wrote an essay which dealt with 'kidnapping' of our entire section, and guess who the kidnapper was : My PT Teacher. So my english maa'm shows it straight to my PT maa'm, and she shoves me big time..

7) This was real bad..
Me telling the Physics teacher in 10th that english class is free, and telling the eng teacher that phy maa'm wanted to take her class..got properly thulped..

8) In 8th, encouraging one of my friends to go and put the teacher in an awkward position by sayin ' Maa'm. He's calling me fucker..'

9) In 10th, we had this 5 marker question on 'menstrual cycle ' in Bio. I wrote such a ridiculous one line answer that she came and asked me ' Karthik. Whats this..?'. The answer was something I don't want to be putting up here.( I got half..for the diagram..)

10) I think this was sometime in 6th..or 7th..English class..

She: Karthik..Stand up, and give me an example of a request (question).
Me: Can you please go out..?
Class into hajjar laughter..Don't even remember what happnd after that..

And then of course there was the case in 9th when me and 4 others were suspended for 3 days because we laughed uncontrollably at a teacher's torn saree(Torn in an objectionable place)..Can't help it much though..

Well, it goes on as usual. And I can somehow sense that all that is affecting me. I am nowhere near my potential now. Doing reasonably well, but nowhere near my best..So i stopped doing all this.. If I get pissed with a prof now, I either bunk the class, or sleep..Besides, if I try out my usual school stuff here, my efforts for getting into IIT might go a waste...Might very well get kicked..

10/25/2005

High hopes..

Well..Continuing along the lines of the 'suttum vizhi' post, its time again when I just have to write about this song. High Hopes, by Floyd. The impression usually goes around that most of the Floyd songs are dope songs, they send you on a instant high once you listen to them. And I experienced this in this song. An absolute dope song, it takes me on a high every time I listen to it..And I've listened to it over a hundred times now..Which effectively means I've gotten a high a hundred times..!

10/23/2005

Love..

An arbit poem about love, no rythm, no nothing..but anyways, jus felt like writing one..

What is it that happens to us when we are in love,
Why does the world seem to hold no meaning at all,
You could spend ages with her, chatting away,
And yet not feel the tide of time passing away.

You see her in your eyes, all time of the day,
Little do you realise what you gotto pay,
As you dream of her throughout the day,
God only help you, hold your way.

You know very well your concentration is lapsing,
But alas! You're helpless, it's not your fault,
Then do you realise how tough this is,
Studies and love together are surely taxing!

You know she's all in life you need,
And never to anything else could you pay any heed,
But a good boy as ever you were,
You give it your best, well, to forget her.

Lo! Time is taking its toll on you,
You're unable to manage the pressure,
As you vacillate between the books and her,
Shivering at thoughts of grades that summer.

But no, it turns out much tougher,
As you start feeling inseparable from her,
Of your future, as your mind reminds you,
You curse your fate, your mind in a hullaballo.

But you see, God's always there,
Watching you with the ever smiling face,
How to get you out, does he know,
Provided you take time off to give him a bow.

So God's what does the trick,
And gets you out, well before any hitch,
And then you go on a studying spree,
With the thought ' God! Can I fall in love when I am free?'

Language..

Over the past year, my ways of communicating with friends have radically changed.. towards the negative side. Its reached a point where almost every sentence of mine has more non dictionary words than the dic ones. Some of them are ( A few are explicit!)...

Before : ' How do you do this problem? Its very tough.'
Now : 'Ey..This problem is rod da..how the fuck do you do it..?'

Before : ' My cycle is making so much noise'
Now: ' This damn thing is gen making N noise'

Before : ' I did very badly man '
Now : ' I cupped hajjar man ' or ' Got denged '

Before : ' I am so depressed '
Now : ' I am hajjar pained '

Before : ' He's such a pain '
Now : ' He's a madar..'

Before : ' I just love this organic chem '
Now : ' Organic is just sexy..'

Before : 'Hey..No way..thats wrong'
Now : ' Bulla..My ass thats right'

Before : ' Don't exaggerate'
Now : ' Don't put cock'

Before : 'The paper had some tough questions'
Now : ' It was gen shady'

Before : ' He's so good. Such an amazing guy'
Now : ' He's GOD'

Before : ' This is irritating me so much '
Now : ' This is a co..sucking thing '

Before : ' This isn't working properly. There's some problem'
Now : ' This is slisha screwed up da..'

Before : 'He doesn't tell anything to others '
Now : ' He's such a RG bastard '

Before : ' Everybody did badly da '
Now : ' Junta got rap..'

Before : ' The paper was so tough.!'
Now : ' Mothering only..'

Before : ' Its ok. Don't keep that in mind'
Now : 'Ey. Pack da. Balls to that'

.......The list goes on and on..Dunno when I'll stop using this language. Hopefully its not too late before I can recoupe.

Muahaha..

Done with my BT exam today. Went quite well. Was just reminded of this incident which happened day before, in the morning. Hostel life glorified.

Maths class at 8 in the morning.

I send a SMS to one of my friends at 7:50 saying ' Are you going to the math class..?'

I get a reply at 7:55 sayin ' I don't know da. I'll see if I'm awake'

Me: rolling....

Once again..

I am once again in the 'Bunked classes-Oh shit, what to do now-Mug last minute-Vomit out' state. BT101..(Forget the name..I don't even know it..)

The only problem being this time there is too much to mug..600 odd slides..and 3 days left..

Suttum vizhi...

Well..I wonder, as to why music has such an enormous impact on most of our lives. Its a sweet mystery, as to what happens to our brain when we hear a tune that somehow matches the frequency of our nerve cells..and we just feel like going on with it, on and on..feel like closing our eyes, imagining ourselves in an alien, heavenly infinitely vast place, with only us, and the song..There IS most obviously a CERTAIN relationship between music and our response to it..The basic inspiration for this post is a song from one of the recent tamil movie 'ghajini' called 'suttum vizhi'. This has become one of my all time favourites, dunno why, as whenever I listen to it, with Bombay Jayashree's voice sweeping my body away,I almost reach an unconscious state,
unconscious of the sorroundings, and all I hear is...the music. Thats the main point why this post came up..This is not an extraordinary song or anything, but somehow, SOMEHOW, it takes my mind with it, and I feel there is some unseen force thats overpowering me, making me go in waves with the song..I am lost for words..Someone..someone, please explain..!!

Harris Jayaraj is GOD..

I am in love...

...With my SOM prof.. Just reminds me of one of his 'Oh very many' motivations he gives us..

"The difference between the students of IIT and the other colleges should be that they should know how to solve a problem with data given, you should know why the data is given"

Man..he rocks..

Bunking classes..

I wonder why there are certain practices that continue to carry on from one generation to another..with greater zeal as time proceeds.. One of them is bunking classes..Right from my grandfather's times to my dad's and now mine.

It seems somehow that this habit of bunking classes is somehow incorporated into all college students(engineering in particular)..thus making even the best and the most regular students entering college become a prolific bunker.

But the case is different with me. I am used to bunking classes right from my 11th..(unfortunately I was in a so called elite school till 10th, which removed any hopes of bunking). We used to do it regularly during our JEE days. And it became a practice, a habit rather. It's always carried on from there, never reduced in any form whatsoever. I have this policy, a belief rather that it is an absolute waste of time to attend a class if the prof isn't good, and we don't gain any substantial amount from the class.. And if proxies are easy in any of these " no enthu classes", I am the first to bunk.

As I just learnt a couple of days back(obly the day before the philosophy quiz) that 'karmic forces' operate in nature, essentially the phrase ' As you sow, so shall you reap'. I realised this in many a situations. One of them is the following incident last year(some of my friends will know it..)

We had this chemistry course, CH102, the inorganic part of which seemed 'gibberish' to me. As the prof was never keen on attendence, and he used to take attendence on sheets, proxies were more than the number attending clases. Moreover, he never cared. Thus,(Alas rather!)I decided to stop going for any classes from the 2nd quiz onward(which roughly translates to the last month of classes). During our end sems, I enquired what the last bit of the portion was, coming to know it was photosynthesis,(in detail), which I naively assumed to be there in a book which I had. I never knew photosynthesis was ever a detailed process on it's own, that I assumed I could do it in the last minute.. So, the day before the end sems, I call up my friend from home, asking which pages to mug..

Time : 21:45

Me: hey..mechanic..Tell me the pages from huheey in photosynthesis..

Mechanic(My roomie) : Ey..b**** da. It's not there in huheey. Don't break your head.

Me: Oh..shit..That's the only book I have da..cmon..don't make me piss..

Mechanic : No da..It seriously isn't there. There are separate notes provided which has all the content required for it..

Me:(seeing the time..)oh..man o man.. ok..I'll forget it then.. I'll skip it..After all, there's not much going to come from that..

Mechanic: Hey..no da.. People here are saying the prof told that 20 marks are from photosynthesis..

Me:(psyched, speechless)Gawd..!

Mechanic : It's ok da..You can come here and mug. Nobody had mugged it still..

Me: Hmm..how the hell..? I still have a chapter to mug on umm..forget it..And my dad..is almost in bed..what do I do..? ok..I'll call you back..

Then, i hang up and go and find my dad and mom kinda already preparing to sleep. I didnt know what to do, kept walking to and fro. My mom, after all is my mom. She could sense the tension in me, getting used to it so many times during my PUC.. Little did she know that my tension was not because I had to study stuff, but that I had to go the insti to do it... I waste some time, then go back nad finish the mugging of the other parts..Time : 11:30..

My dad's in bed.. These are the times when you feel you are no better than a baby. You just feel like letting off a cry, but lo! being 19, crying is perhaps the last thing you want to do. So, i take the dare. I go and wake my dad up..

Me: Appa..

Dad: Ya..

Me: Can you drop me in the insti..I need to study stuff..

Dad: Now! 11:45.?!

Me: Ya..no one in the hostel has done it..I'll do it together with them..

Dad:okay..come..lets leave..

Both of us leave for the insti, giving the IN GATE security guys a shocker.. tell 'em that my dad's come to drop me, and somehow manage to go in.. my dad leaves me, gets back home..

I start mugging at 12:30, finish by 4:30, sleep..sleep..Till I hear some noises..Oh..it's time..7:30..! Hmm..half an hour to go.. Try to recollect as much as possible..go to the hall, give the exam..

Time: 11 AM..

All of us had only one phrase coming out of us

" F*** those assoles"
Reason: The only question on photosynthesis was a 2 marker, that too asking the net reaction of it..and 15 marks in cytochrome P-450, which all of us conveniently skipped thinking it's unimportant, besides, at 4:30 it is completely humane to skip a topic than to spend another hour on it..

Today is the second time it's happening..ID120..None of us have practically gone for classes..And the quiz is on saturday. And I find there are 350 powerpoint slides to mug..I have to start it immediately after this post...Oh..why not now..?

Umm..

Umm..

Basic elec..

Well, I just forgot to mention a point in the last post. That we had atrociously less space in the basic elec paper, that is best summarized by one of my friends..

"The average space for a question was just enough to put an average non erect c*** horizontally in it"

Quiz..

Had quizzes this week. And i seem to continue my talent of screwing up answers.. 4 out of the 5 answers in my basic elec paper are wrong..hmm..have one more to go..indian philosophy on tue..Basically have to put arbit cock..Lets see..

3 weeks up..

Yup..it is about 3 weeks since our college reopened, and it's been a very good period since then. For a variety of reasons. Firstly, as i already put it, going in as a senior makes a hell lot of a differene to your confidence. Secondly, we have such a 'peaceful' sem that perhaps only the SOM course is where we might have to use our head a bit. Thirdly,..well forget it..

Well, coming back to the courses, we have the 'woreshtesht' of 'em this sem, including the likes of 'Life sciences', 'Ecology and environment'..! And of course some sheer brute force courses like 'partial differential equations' and 'machine drawing'. So, amongst all this, only the ' Strength of materials' seems to be intellectually stimulating a bit. And the prof rocks. It's these kind of profs that make us realise that we ARE IN IIT..absolute stud, very friendly.

An example : The attendence is usually taken on a sheet of paper with our names and signature. One of the days, after the attendence was completed, the sheet went to him(when he was doing stress tensors). So, he just stopped lecturing, had a glance at the paper for a minute(while some of us held our breaths,u know for what!!), immediately made an 'announcement' the kind in railway stations, saying " ok..there are 4 proxies. Please stand up.!" most of us were dumbstruck.. And 3 guys stood up.. he took the names of those who got proxies from these guys and marked 'em absent for the class, that's all. Nothin more, nothin less.. And all he told us was ' As engineers, ethics rank first in importance, so if you don't come to classes and get proxies, you might end up adding more sand to cement tommorrow, where your kid might go and end up with the building over his/her head.!" Beauty ain't it??

Oooh yes.. I forgot the humanities course ' Indian philosophy'. At first, i was pissed that I got this, but as usual i concluded that all happens for good..! Now, i absolutely enjoy it. With arbit stuff discussed in class, including 'reality', 'truth', 'beauty' etc..Absolute ball..! Besides, I have decided to continue my work with my prof that I had so abruptly left in the hols. So I am going to have a good time this sem..

Lets hope it carries on well, and I don't screw up my grades..And every day is a memorable one..
